As a international benchmark, this global biotech meeting enables attendees (almost 15,000 this year) to dialogue and gain information on the sector's major trends (such as how to develop new business models in response to the global economic crisis), forge new collaborations, gain international visibility and do business with the pharmaceutical companies, biotech firms, service providers and investors present.
The local councils, the Rhône-Alpes Regional Council, the Greater Lyons Metropolitan Area, the Grenoble Alpes Metropolitan Area and the Lyons Chamber of Commerce & Industry joined forces to showcase the region's life science sector at the event by enabling 12 companies (Altrabio, ERYtech Pharma, Eurofins-Optimed Clinical Research, genOway, Germain & Maureau, ImaXio, ImmunID Technologies, Metabolys, PX'Therapeutics, Valysco and Voxcan) to exhibit on a joint booth under the "Lyonbiopôle" banner. The unrelenting year-on-year increase in attendance by local companies truly testifies to the strength of the Rhône-Alpes region's scientific and industrial fabric.
BIO constitutes an ideal gateway to the North American biotech market - the biggest market in the world. During the 4-day event, companies can leverage BIO's highly specialized, international dimension to showcase their activities and know-how to a global audience. The objective is to clinch deals or seal collaboration agreements; this was the case in 2008 for PX'Therapeutics, which signed a co-marketing and co-development agreement with the American firm Althea Technologies.
BIO 2009 was also a great opportunity for the Lyonbiopôle cluster (a world-leading centre of excellence in vaccines and diagnostics) to promote the competitiveness of French companies and facilitate their interactions with American and other international firms via the 3rd edition of the "Fast-Track R&D Partnering with France" event (organized jointly with France's other bioclusters) on the afternoon of Monday, May 18 (www.fasttrackbio.com/2009).
