Thanks to funding from the French postal and telecom services' Patients and Disabled Persons Association, the Louis Pradel Hospital will be the first in France to acquire the latest technology for monitoring and maintaining the functional quality of hearts for transplantation.
The organ care system (marketed by the company Transmedics®) reproduces the body's blood circulation (perfusion with warm, oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood) and makes it possible to monitor the behavior of the beating organ during transport - the acidity of the surrounding liquid, the release of cardiac enzymes and any resistance to coronary perfusion flow, etc.
This enables in-depth evaluation of the heart's functional quality and increases the chances of successful transplantation.
The Lyon Public Hospitals Group's cardiac surgery team is pioneering this field in France. It will perform a multicenter study to investigate the real benefits in terms of the number of additional transplants made available to French patients on the transplantation waitlist.
