WORLD CANCER DAY - THE CONCLUSIONS

OF THE INTERNATIONAL AGENCY FOR RESEARCH ON CANCER

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) presented its 2007 annual world cancer data update at a press conference on World Cancer Day (February 4th) at the Agency's Lyon headquarters on the "Pôle Santé Rockefeller" site.

The report's main conclusions were as follows:

  • The majority of the global cancer burden has now shifted from westernized, developed countries towards medium- and low-resource countries faced with changing food habits, an increasingly sedentary lifestyle, obesity and a range of sociological changes (increasing age at first birth and decreasing parity in women). The greatest increases in incidence notably concern breast cancer and colorectal cancer.
  • The progression of the cancer epidemic, taking account of the growth and aging of the world's population, leads to a forecast incidence of 20 to 25 million cases and 13 to 16 million deaths due to cancer in 2030.
  • Tobacco remains the main risk factor for the disease. The increasing prevalence of tobacco use (notably in poor countries) heralds a rapid progression in cancer worldwide in the years to come.
